On the Sports front, we now have three Boules Pistes with over 30 teams involved in the increasingly popular Rattlebone Boules League. We also have a classic Skittles Alley which is available for hire for both private and corporate functions.
In recent years a game not too dissimilar to Boules, but involving throwing agricultural cattle feed turnips (Mangold Wurzels) has been resurrected. This is the game of ‘Mangold Hurling’.
A previously shadowy organisation, The Ancient Order of Sherston Mangold Hurlers has recently become more active under the leadership of the current Grand Master Martin Rea, and Keeper of The Mangold Maids (and Tenant of The Rattlebone), Jason Read. Each May, the crowning of The Mangold Maid is held at the pub, and every October ‘The Grand Hurl’ happens in the village hall field behind The Rattlebone. Slightly bonkers, it’s a ‘must’ for all fans of English eccentrics!
